Processor Endianness

Hi Guys,

can anybody please explain me why in this world there are two different types of endianness. I searched over internet but many explains only little and big endian and there differences and not why these types came into picture. links to any articles will be also be great help.

your help is appreciated.

We have endianness for the same reasons we have different processor architectures. A CPU designer trades off hardware size, code size, execution speed, and ease of programming. Endianness is just one of hundreds of tradeoffs.

Wikipedia has a good article on endianness including a section on some of the performance trade offs
